Qingdao Beaches Ranked: Which One Is Right for You?

Sunny beach with golden sand and blue ocean water

Qingdao has earned its reputation as one of China’s best beach cities, with a stunning coastline stretching over 730 kilometers along the Yellow Sea. Unlike many Chinese coastal cities where pollution and crowds can overwhelm, Qingdao’s beaches are remarkably clean, well-maintained, and backed by a gorgeous urban skyline of red-roofed buildings and modern towers.

But not all Qingdao beaches are created equal. Each has its own personality — from bustling family beaches to quiet coves and surfer-friendly stretches. Here’s our honest ranking to help you find your perfect match.

🥇 No. 2 Bathing Beach (第二海水浴场) — Best Overall

Tucked inside the Badaguan scenic area, No. 2 Beach is a small crescent cove that delivers everything you want in a beach experience: soft golden sand, calm clear water, and a backdrop of century-old villas and pine trees. It’s smaller and more intimate than the main beaches, which means fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere.

The beach was reportedly a favorite retreat of Chairman Mao, and it’s easy to see why — there’s a peaceful, almost private quality to this cove that the larger beaches can’t match. The surrounding Badaguan neighborhood is perfect for pre- or post-swim walks.

Best for: Couples, photography, a relaxed afternoon
Swimming: Excellent — calm, sheltered water
Crowds: Moderate (much less than No. 1)
Facilities: Changing rooms, showers, nearby cafés
📍 Shanhaiguan Road, Badaguan, Shinan District

🥈 No. 1 Bathing Beach (第一海水浴场) — Best for Families

The biggest and most famous beach in Qingdao, No. 1 Beach stretches 580 meters along Huiquan Bay with a wide expanse of fine sand. This is where you’ll find the classic Qingdao beach experience — colorful umbrellas, splashing kids, floating tubes, and the lively energy of a popular summer destination.

The beach has excellent infrastructure: lifeguards on duty during swimming season, clean changing rooms, equipment rentals, and plenty of food vendors nearby. The gentle slope into the water makes it safe for children.

Best for: Families, first-time visitors, beach sports
Swimming: Good — gentle waves, lifeguards on duty
Crowds: High in summer (can be packed on weekends)
Facilities: Full — lifeguards, showers, rentals, food
📍 Nanhai Road, Shinan District
💡 Tip: Arrive before 9 AM on weekends to claim a good spot.

🥉 Shilaoren Beach (石老人海水浴场) — Best for Young Travelers

Named after a distinctive rock formation resembling an “old stone man” rising from the sea, Shilaoren is Qingdao’s longest beach at 2.5 kilometers. It’s located in the modern eastern part of the city and has a more youthful, energetic vibe — think beach volleyball, surfing, and sunset bars.

The waves here are bigger than at the sheltered city beaches, making Shilaoren the go-to spot for bodyboarding and surfing. The beachfront development includes restaurants, bars, and coffee shops with ocean views.

Best for: Young travelers, surfing, sunset watching
Swimming: Good but watch the waves — stronger currents
Crowds: Moderate (spread out due to length)
Facilities: Good — restaurants, rentals, parking
📍 Shilaoren, Laoshan District

4. No. 3 Bathing Beach (第三海水浴场) — Best Hidden Gem

This tiny cove near the Taipingwan area is one of Qingdao’s best-kept secrets. Smaller and less known than its numbered neighbors, No. 3 Beach offers a quiet, almost secluded beach experience right in the heart of the city. The rocky headlands on either side create a natural frame, and the clear water is excellent for swimming.

It’s a favorite of local photographers and couples looking for a romantic spot without the crowds. The wooden boardwalk above the beach is perfect for an evening stroll.

Best for: Quiet relaxation, photography, locals’ atmosphere
Swimming: Excellent — calm and clear
Crowds: Low
Facilities: Basic
📍 Taipingwan, near Badaguan

5. Golden Sand Beach (金沙滩) — Best for a Day Trip

Located across the bay in Huangdao District (accessible by undersea tunnel or bridge), Golden Sand Beach lives up to its name with ultra-fine, genuinely golden sand that stretches for over 3 kilometers. The water quality is generally cleaner than the city beaches, and the setting feels more like a resort destination than an urban beach.

This is also where the Qingdao International Beer Festival is held each August, transforming the beachfront into Asia’s biggest beer party.

Best for: Sand quality, space, Beer Festival season
Swimming: Good
Crowds: Low–moderate (except during Beer Festival)
Facilities: Good — developing resort area
📍 Huangdao District (30–40 min from downtown)
💡 Tip: Worth the trip if you have a full day — combine with exploring the Huangdao area.

6. Yinsha Beach (银沙滩) — Best for Solitude

Right next to Golden Sand Beach but far less visited, Silver Sand Beach is the place to go if you want to feel like you have the ocean to yourself. The sand is fine and white (hence the “silver” name), the water is clean, and on weekdays you might share the beach with only a handful of people. There’s less development here, which means fewer facilities but more natural beauty.

Best for: Escaping crowds, natural beach experience
Swimming: Good
Crowds: Very low
Facilities: Minimal
📍 Huangdao District (near Golden Sand Beach)

Qingdao Beach Season: When to Swim

The official swimming season runs from July 1 to September 30, when lifeguards are on duty and water temperatures reach a comfortable 22–26°C. June and early October can also be pleasant for hardy swimmers, but lifeguard coverage may be limited.

Water temperatures by month (approximate): June 18–20°C, July 22–25°C, August 25–27°C (peak), September 22–24°C, October 18–20°C.

Beach Essentials to Pack

Sunscreen (UV is strong even on overcast days), swimwear, water shoes (some beaches have rocky sections), a waterproof phone case, cash for umbrella and chair rentals (¥30–50), and a change of clothes. Most beaches have freshwater showers available for ¥5–10.
